Baluchi is located in one of Patong’s boutique hotels, Horizon Beach Resort. Named after Baluchistan, a mountainous region in Pakistan, this open-air restaurant was the first Indian venue on the island.
The first thing we noticed upon entering Baluchi’s relaxed atmosphere was that at least half the restaurant’s customers were Indian – this usually indicates either very few choices of this cuisine or good, authentic food.
The kitchen has been modified to exposed chefs at work to customers in the dining area. If you’re a dal lover, you must try their Dal Baluchi, lentils simmered overnight and finished with cream, it was the best I’ve ever tasted; not to be missed is the tandoori dishes, each a delight. Some favorites include the Tandoori chicken, baby chicken and Indian spices prepared Tandoor-style as is the Tandoori Nisa, barbecue tiger prawns with Indian spices. The prawns were fresh, large and delicious. The Mutton Rogan Josh is a specialty of the house and is a favorite of many repeat customers. One more popular chicken dish that I'd like to mention is the Murg Laziz. The boneless pieces of chicken is served in a rich tomato and onion gravy. Of course there are vegetarian dishes that include; Paneer Ka Sula, cubes of cottage cheese marinated in yoghurt, and cooked in a clay oven as well as the Kadhai Paneer, cottage cheese cooked in ground spices. It is easy to see why native customers enjoy this restaurant as it is truly, good quality, authentic Indian cuisine.
There’s a resident band and themed Thai dinners; Baluchi offers their Maharaja & Mahrani fixed price menus at Baht 425++ and Baht 590++ per person. They also offer cocktails and have an adequate wine list.
