Gallery Charernrat Road

Built in 1892 and one of the oldest original wooden structures in Chiang Mai, The Gallery is one of the most tranquil and romantic of the choice riverside restaurants on the eastern bank of the Mae Ping river.With its combination of exquisite Lanna architecture, fine Thai cuisine, and exhibits of Northern Thai art, "The Gallery" is a perfect setting for relaxation and entertainment. The structure was built by the grandfather of the current owner/manager, Surachai Leosawasthiphong. The grandfather, an immigrant from China, married a Chiang Mai woman on whose property the structure was built. The site was initially the family store which sold cotton silk and household items. Surachai's family used the structure as the family home until 1978, when they moved to a new house and created the Gallery Restaurant.

The first room is used as an art gallery, often spotlighting the work of local artists. Beyond this lies an attractive terraced garden restaurant. The specialty is northern Thai cuisine. Popular items include curries, noodles and rice dishes but don't miss the hor mok curry, a popular Chiang Mai dish, which is delicious. Dishes average 150 baht. A few vegetarian options are available, as are soft drinks, hot beverages and a full bar. Special menus and buffets can be arranged.
