We took Rama 4 to the soi (Ngam Duplee) where the Maylasia Hotel sits, turned left on Sri Bam Pen and down to the end to make a left and follow the street around to find "Le Cafe Siam". When we arrived, it was getting dark already, which is a good time to get to the restaurant as the soi is not the most attractive. The 2 storey grand colonial house was beautiful with accent lighting and a jungle of trees that make the restaurant appear it sits on a street somewhere in the New Orleans French Quarter. Attached to the side of the house is a covered trellace with lovely seating to enjoy dining al fresco, however, we opted to eat inside and upon entering the restaurant we chose a table by the window.
Only seated for a moment, we were offered the drink list and all four of us decided on a glass of house wine. A glass of Bordeau for the gents and Cabernet Sauvignon for the ladies. I explained to our dining partners that this lovely old house was built in 1921 by one of the engineers of the Royal Railway of Siam and after being vacated for some time was renovated by two French entrepreneurs to later become "Le Cafe Siam". Unfortunately, the chef seems to have changed both times I have visited the restaurant which has also impacted the quality and choices of the menu items, so we hoped this visit would reveal some great menu choices. As one views the menu, it takes only a moment to realize this is not some trendy fusion cuisine, but a complete list of separate Thai and French favorites. We decided that this was to be a "French" night, and that if we return, it will be for "Thai" cuisine.
The menu offers several starters, seafood & fish dishes. There are about 8 meat dishes and a few grilled items. We decided to select some attractive sounding dishes and share them amongst each other. The first was the "Roasted Rock Lobster with a Mango Viniagrette, rocket salad filled with aromatic herbs and an oven-baked nougat of crushed almonds, sliced ginger and minced garlic". Our second selection was the "Baked Fillet of Snowfish with Planchetta Ham in a balsamic sauce". Although we were each tempted to order the Foie Gras, we were won over by the Lamb Stew. The final choice was the "Roasted Veal Chop aromatized with thyme, fork mashed potatoes with young onions and buttered chives. Each entre was very good to excellent and were good values.
The service is attentive while finding the staff fairly knowledgeable and able to make recommendations.
We walked upstairs to find a number of rooms fitted with upholstered sofas & overstuffed chairs where we chose dessert from a selection of about 8. Since our last visit, the restaurant had indeed changed the chef and changed the menu selections as it is now more Mediterranean inspired with prices slightly increasing a bit. It is still a lovely place for a romantic dinner and we'll return, next time selecting Thai cuisine, dining outside on the terrace. |
