Baan Khanitha, the name of two award-winning Thai restaurants and the brainchild of a lady who made her name as a designer of garments for her boutiques. Khanitha decided to open a restaurant that matched her high expectations of cuisine and decor. The result, Baan Khanitha, a charming restaurant that opened 9 years ago in a Thai-style house in Soi 23 Sukhumvit. Khanitha created a homely ambiance through the use of traditional handicrafts, paintings, plants, and decor.
In September 2005, Baan Khanitha & Gallery on South Sathorn road was established as the second branch of Baan Khanitha with the concept of a restaurant & gallery. Thai style wooden furniture and orange ceramic tile floor give a warm feeling of an old Thai house. A garden with the watering glass roof at the back of the house is an ideal corner for smokers while three function rooms are available on the second floor.
Both restaurants offer a range of traditional Thai dishes that are authentic in taste and presentation. For a starter, my family and I tried one of Thailand's most popular dishes, Tom Yam Khung soup. Other traditional dishes we enjoyed were the Spicey Pomelo Salad with Chicken and Shrimp and the Spicy Papaya and Carrot Salad. The Stir-fried Soft Shell Crabs with Black Pepper is slightly crunchy on the outside while pleasantly soft on the inside. The Steamed Seabass is pleaseantly fresh while I still must recommend the Roast Duck Curry with Grapes in a rich Red Curry Sauce. For dessert, Try Taro, Bean and Pumpkin Dumplings in Coconut Milk.
