Fishermen in Thailand have set a world record for the largest freshwater fish ever found - a 646 pound Mekong giant catfish. This dinosaur-looking fish was caught in a net as part of a project to protect large freshwater fish. It was then taken to a remote village and eaten. It is truly unbelievable to imagine that giants like this still swim in some of the world's rivers.

The previous record for the largest freshwater fish was 468 pounds for a sturgeon. The project was headed by the International Wildlife Fund that partnered with the National Geographic Society. The project leader, Mr Zeb Hogan, stated "Some like the Mekong Catfish face extinction. We must find methods to protect these species and their habitats." The Mekong River is home to more species of giant fish than any other river in the world, say researchers. The Mekong River stretches through the far north of Thailand, near the borders of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and China.
