In the past 8 years Je Ngor's Seafood has grown from it's original location on Charoenkrung 39 to seven branches in the Bangkok area. I visited their Sathorn location on the 11th floor of the Bangkok Insurance & YWCA Building, a very contemporary setting with extremely high cielings with an interior of stone, steel and glass that looks out to a lovely view of the city, for lunch a few months back so I was looking forward to visiting their stand alone signature restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 20.
From a selection of about 14 hors d' oeuvres, we started our dinner with a variety plate called the "5 Special Hors d' Oeuvres" which includes Fried Ginkgo Pods, Sweet & Sour Shrimp, Slice of Jellyfish sprikled with Red Chili, Fried Fish Sticks, plus a mixture of Mushroom, Crab and Eggs. The selection, for any seafood lover, is a smorgasboard of great dishes. There is a limited selection of wines from Italy and Chile although we chose to drink beer as most of the popular brands are represented. Our party of four persons chose to share an order of Papaya Salad which was prepared less hot than most Thais probably prefer and a couple orders of Tom Yam Goong, a delicious spicy prawn soup. Both dishes are considered top choices for Thais and foreigners when it comes to Thai food. They are authentic and some of the best you will get to eat in Thailand. There is 7 styles of Prawns, along with River Lobsters, and at least 7 types of Crab. One of the signature dishes is extremely popular for many that visit, the "Stir-fried Crab with Garlic and Black Pepper. I am not that crazy about crab but this is the winner that brings me and my friends back. With 16 styles of prepared fish, Sea-bass is at the top of the list ...served either charcoaled, grilled, which is probably the most popular method and how we chose to order ours, steamed with soy sauce or steamed with chopped chilli and garlic in lemon sauce. It is also delicious deep-fried with garlic and pepper, or fried and shredded with Chinese celery, or with black bean sauce. Besides the Payaya Salad we chose, the selection on the menu includes some great spicy salads, such as, Mixed Seafood with Spicy Sauce and a Grilled Pork Salad with Spicy Sauce.
The four of us enjoyed an array of different dishes, all of which are generous and artisticly presented. The Stir-fried Mixed Vegetables with Mushrooms is a vegetarian delight as is the Stir-fried Broccoli and Morning Glory. "Soup is delicious here, with Prawn or River Lobster in Spicy Sauce", or "Shredded Seabass/Garouper or Chicken in Spicy Sauce" and a host of about 6 or 7 other hot pots, sour or spicy soups. If you must have a meat dish, there are at least 4 types each of pork and chicken. Rice dishes include 7 types, each mixed with seafood and other ingredients while the 9 noodle plates include dishes, such as, "Cantonese Egg Noodle with Prawn". For dessert, there are about 6 selections that include fresh fruit and taro, The "Deep-fried sweetened Snow Taro" is a treat
The service is personalized, low-key and friendly, with tips from the staff available for all areas of the menu. Set meals are offered for parties of 8 or more with private rooms and karaoke also available.
