The Drum and Gong Fusion Restaurant serves Asian fusion cuisine with emphasis on
Sichuan flavor. The restaurant itself is north of the famous Passby Bar. It has
a very simple, homely decor and soft music.
The first thing foreigners will appreciate is the bilingual menu. It clearly
identifies the dish according to the ingredients rather than a translation of
some Chinese name (example: ants climbing up a tree). Also, menu items have a
spicy rating of 1 to 5. The menu also uses a smiley face system next to every
dish to indicate if they are foreigner-friendly. (Imagine seeing chicken feet in
an innocent sounding dish called Phoenix Claws in Hong Kong.)
Since one of the bosses is English, who has been living in Beijing for over 5
years, he frequently updates the menu with creative Western-style cooking with
local flavors preparing the dishes to better fit the tastes of Westerners. The
local beer is an excellent match to the spiciness of the food. |
