Many landmarks assure this place is easy to find. Situated in South Pattaya, the restaurant is next to the Baiyoke Hotel and directly across from the Camelot Hotel. Expectations of grandeur or fancy ambiance are quickly replaced with simplicity of a family-run diner atmosphere. The owner and head chef, "Ravi" has been here for 12 years and is well known in the community for being an expert in Indian cuisine. He also has the "Ravi Supermarket" on soi 17 that offers everything from masalas and teas to those hard to find Indian spices.
My co-worker and I entered the restaurant and were greeted by a couple friendly staff members who invited us to sit anywhere we liked. The restaurant seats about 50 persons plus an upstairs, which has a private entrance, accommodating an additional 50 people for parties or banquets.
William and I had a seat by the front window, each ordered a Kingfisher Indian beer and stepped over to check out the buffet that was already set up. It offers salads plus 10 hot dishes, including Tandori Chicken and other favorites and is a bargain at 189 baht. This was my friends first time eating Indian cuisine, therefore, we chose menu items to share of some dishes that I've eaten here during my last couple visits.
We started our meal with appetizers; "Vegetable Samosa" and "Aloo Tikki". The samosa has small perfectly cut pieces of potato, peas and spices and when the chutney mint sauce is added, the taste is fantastic. The aloo tikki, cottage cheese with a touch of chutney and spices, are perfectly fried like a pancake, not oily, it's a great appetizer to complement our beer. I could already tell William was enjoying the meal and the best was on it's way. We ordered another beer, started off with some garlic naan and since he mentioned he loves chicken we then tried the "Tandoori Chicken", dousing it with the mint sauce and a squeeze of lime. We could have eaten more but there was a lot of food yet to appear on our table. Our first main course, "Mutton Makhani" arriving in a green bowl, had a brown gravy with a lovely smell of cooked black lentils. Next was "Mutton Karahi", served in a metal bowl, it offers chunks of mutton & spices and arrived with hot "Butter Naan" ...it was super. We also ordered a dish of "Vegetable Biryani Rice" as it is delicious with any main course poured overtop, such as our next dish, "Butter Chicken". Also arriving in a green bowl, the gravy is orange in color from the spices and cream, this is my favorite and the finale to our meal. All this food, 3 different types of naan, and we were more than content. As I expected, my co-worker really enjoyed his first experience in Indian cuisine and eventhough we had no room for dessert there will certainly be a next time.
