We got off the BTS skytrain at Chitlom and after walking down trendy Soi Langsuan less than five minutes we were greeted by the brightly lit sign of Lumba Lumba, a Chinese seafood restaurant, offering the city's first Bali infused restaurant. Lumba Lumba is a creation resulting from the owner traveling to Bali only to fall in love with the beauty of its decorations and art. This unique seafood restaurant seats about 140 persons and offers 2 private rooms.
We received a welcome by two hostesses escorting us inside to find beautiful Balinese statues, artifacts and artwork that cover the surrounding dining room walls. Even the tablecloths and utensils are authentically Balinese. The restaurant was romantically low-lit and has numerous large fish tanks surrounding the dining room, all full of fresh lobster or seafood. Usually seafood restaurants are bland when it comes to atmosphere, not here, as the ambiance was intriquing and there is an open kitchen where patrons can observe the master chef prepare his creations. My date and I selected a table on the lower level, sitting next to a window and near the bar, so we could see the band that plays nightly from 7 to 11 (except Mondays). This vantage point allowed us to easily recognize our friends that would join us for dinner.
Our evening started with drinks, my date chose a glass of house wine and I chose the Carlsberg on draft because the offer a "Happy Hour" all-you-can-drink beer special. Our two friends arrived, ordered beer as well, and after a few minutes of chatting about the interior of the restaurant we started to check out the menu selections.
We each ordered a starter that included a couple orders of "Hong Kong Spring Rolls", "Fried Fish Maw with Egg Prawn", and Duck Tongue with Soya Sauce". All the appetizers were delicious but we were ready for lobster and no doubt about it, this was the right place. We each chose this creature prepared in different cooking methods except my date, who decided on the "Fried Crab with Curry Powder". I selected the "Baked Lobster with White Wine" while our friends selected the "King Lobster Sashimi with Hot Pot" along with the "Lobster with Fruit Salad". There are some other great items on the menu, such as, "King Abalone with Brown Sauce'' and a dish that I must try when I return... the "Drunken Prawns". Our dinner was delicious, the atmosphere and service was prompt as well. |
