The restaurant sits on Sukhumvit Soi 33, practically next to the Novotel Lotus, and amongst the numerous nightclubs and hostess lounges that has made Soi 33 popular as an night-time entertainment area. With the Dali bar on one side and Bacchus being on the other, it sits across from Van Gogh, Renoir, and Degas bars. It was originally opened across the soi where Basilico Italian restaurant now sits. The clientele is a mix of foreigners and Thai, many being gentlemen and Thai ladies enjoying an authentic Thai meal after a first encounter at a local bar. The restaurant delivers as patrons call from area establishments seeking Thai food. There is a musician sitting next to the Oam Thong, and she adds to the atmosphere with her mix of music. If you are unfortunate enough to sit near the wall that separates the restaurant from Dali, you will feel, and possibly hear the loud music that penetrates through the building.
Staff wearing traditional thai-style garments politely escorted the two of us to our table. We arrived early in the evening and started our meal with a coconut juice and proceeded to start sampling the menu. For an appetizers, we shared the prawns (somewhat small) in a spicy tamarind sauce. It was tangy and woke your mouth up with flavor. Next, a combination of fried shrimp patties with a honey sauce and fresh spring rolls with a tradional Vietamese sauce. The next item was a dish offering lots of fresh & boiled vegetables with bright red and green chillies that decorated the top of the bowl. Next was a deep-fried butterfish fileted open and served with a mango sauce. The last item we selected from the menu was duck. With a Chinese influence, it was served with spring greens that contrasted the fatty duck meat. The food was authentic Thai and teased our palate with traditional favorites and some Vietnamese influences. Unfortunately, if wine is a favorite, there is a very limited list to choose from. |
