Patara sits in a relatively small modern house. Its outdoor foliage can be viewed by diners through the windows. Decor is clean with all wood floors, warm lighting, glass walls and brown tones accompanied by laid back music.
The menu, basically Thai, incorporates many Cosmopolitan imported products making the restaurants creative dishes what we call "Thaifused" cuisine, offering house specials that are hard to resist. Start with the "Mini Tacos", which you build yourself with the provided shrimp, pork and cucumber salsa. Another choice is the "Raw Tuna Carpaccio" with lime and lemongrass vinaigrette while equally tempting is the grilled "Aubergine and Crabmeat Salad", with a tangy vinaigrette of lime, caviar and shallots. Soups are great and the "Hot and Spicy Tom Yum Prawn" or "Seafood Soup" with mushrooms, Lemongrass and slices of young Coconut meat is exceptional
Meat dishes include "Slices of Duck Breast" laced with a garlic chilli sauce topped with crisp basil or "Lemongrass marinated New Zealand Rack of Lamb", accompanied with a spicy chilli sauce, green papaya salad and sweet rice rolls are hard to exist. There is also "Veal Ossobucco in Yellow Curry" and "Sauteed Australian Beef Sirloin in Green Curry Sauce" with wild herbs and young coconut shoots. Speakin of curry, there are about 6 dishes of curry with chicken, duck or lamb. There are a few Isaan dishes and then come the seafood choices. For fish lovers there is "Steamed Sea Bass with Lime and Chilli", the premium fillet tastes delicious with the added pazazz of the sauce. There are a few styles of Sri Lankan Crabs, Australian live clams, and live prawns. The menu also offers about 8 vegetable items and 6 or 7 noodle/rice dishes. If you have room for dessert, there are a few different choices. The caramelized mini bananas with coconut cream is a real treat.
Patara offers a nice choice of martinis, exotic, and house drinks, however, the most pleasant surprise is the selection of wine. Unlike many Thai restaurants, the choice of both reds and white include a nice selection of French and New World wines. |
