Just off Thong Lor (Sukhumvit 55), on Soi 20, this restaurant sits at the ground floor of the SPC bldg where it affords customers plenty of covered parking and a convenient location for Italian food in this part of town with the BTS stopping at Sukhumvit 55. Open since October 2004, most of the kinks are out as the restaurant offers a complete Italian menu. When entering the restaurant, you find a casual, yet elegant atmosphere with dual linen table-covers and high-back wooden chairs. The central dining area has a large screen TV at one end while the other end has full glass windows facing the street.
If you are a pasta lover, then Piatto D'oro is the place for you. My date and I started the evening with a glass of German beer. She chose the "Franziskaner" while I had a "Lowenbrau". For appetizers, she chose the "Verdure Miste Alla Griglia", which is a vegetable plate with grilled zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, green pepper, potato, onion and tomato while I chose the "Carpaccio Di Salmone", salmon very thinly sliced then marinated. Pizza bread accompanies the dish. We asked our waiter about the pasta choices. Within seconds he appeared with a tray with 7 different colors of fettucini. He explained "Any pasta dish you order is available in any of the 7 homemade flavors (colors) of pasta, such as: spinach, squid ink, carrot, pumpkin, egg, beet root and cabbage". While pondered the menu, we deciding to accompany our meal with a large carafe of the house red wine ("Vino Da Tivola").
Our dinner started with an order of "Canelloni Alla Fiorentina". This delicious dish of cannelloni is oven-baked and prepared Florence-style with layers of spinach ricotta cheese then topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella. We also chose "Ravioli Piatto D'oro", ravioli prepared with rock lobster, fresh tomato, garlic and white wine …superb. The chef insisted we try the pork fillet with gorgonzola cream sauce and brought us a healthy plate to taste. Yes, it was fantastic. Main courses that we chose were the "Seafood Pasta" that offers squid, shrimp, mussels, clams and crab in a tomato gravy. Next up was the "Medallions Of Manzo", a dish of medallions of young beef prepared with porcini mushrooms & red wine sauce creating a deliciously tender taste of beef. There were many other great choices on the menu, such as: tiger prawns on charcoal and the great choices of spaghetti and pizza. Next time we'll try to save room for dessert.
