Chinese Barbecue Sauce (Char Sui)

1/2 cup sherry
2/3 cup hoisin sauce
2/3 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup sugar
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tspblack bean paste
1 1/2 tsp chinese 5-spice powder
1 tsp salt

Combine all ingredients in a double boiler and simmer for 10 minutes or until it begins to thicken.
