Thailand is famous for its seafood and in Bangkok there is one that stands out, the palatial Seafood Palace on Sukhumvit Road. Located on the corner of Asoke and Sukhumvit Road, the restaurant sits at the base of the Asoke BTS station, just across from the MRT train.
Customers arrive to view a large neon-lit sign with an impressive frontage. As patrons enter, one side offers a glass window showing chefs working in view in an open kitchen with leaping gas flames and clouds of steam, while the other side of the entrance offers an outdoor Thai show with dancers and authentic instruments that invite patrons to a full dining experience. Adjacent to the restaurant is a market stall where you make your seafood selection of fresh fish and seafood in large tanks or on ice. Each of your selections are prepared in the cooking method you choose; fried, steamed or grilled Thai or European style, and is then delivered to your table. Charges are according to the weight of your selection with a modest cooking fee. The wine enclave offers a collection of French wines accompanied by a nice selection of free world producers while there is a bar with all the standard cocktails and soft drinks.
Decorated with beautiful crystal chandeliers, lovely curtains, and oversize tables covered in starched linen, the center of the restaurant offers a stage where the second traditional Thai-style show is performed between 7:45PM and 10:00PM nightly. At the end of each show, patrons are entertained by performers that walk around tables where customers can shoot photos of these memorable moments.
To get started, the four of us shared a bottle of the house wine, a Cote Du Ru Merlot from France, and then we selected our mouth-watering choices. We decided to eat buffet style and share our selections. We started with a plate of Scallops as an appetizer along with Tom Yum soup that was loaded with a mix of crab, fish and shrimp. Our selections included the "Char-grilled Seabass" with butter and garlic, "Pineapple with Fried Rice & Large Shrimps", a dish of "Stir-fried Vegetables", "River Prawns with Chili Paste" served Thai style that includes a host of delicious veggies. Who could resist the "Baked King Lobster with White Wine" and since there was two couples, why not add the "Rainbow Lobster with Fruit Salad". It was enough food for an army but we also included some "Shrimp Fried Rice" and "Steamed King Crab". Everything was delicious and when we return we'll have to leave a little room for dessert.
