The restaurant is situated at #1, Sukhumvit 14; hence, the name “Sukhumvit House Number 1”. The history of the house dates back to the early 1900’s. The original owners were the Kannasut Family who were direct descendents of King Taksin Maharaj, the founder of Bangkok. The house was skillfully crafted from timber by local artisans. It is a rare and delightful example of the type of grand house once favored by Thai nobility in the Western-influenced“colonial” style. Around 1950, the French Ambassador to Thailand bought the house from the Kannasut family. Ambassador Entree was accorded the high honour of Governor General by HM King Rama VII himself. He later took up the post of Deputy Ambassador in several European countries, including England and Russia. His last 15 years in civil service were served as Ambassador to Laos. In 2003, at 91 years of age, he passed away as owner of this historic and welcoming house.

The two story restaurant offers seating for 35 persons inside the downstairs while the upstairs has space for 45 seats al fresco with 3 rooms that each seat 6 - 10 persons.

The menu is fairly extensive and from a nice choice of traditional starters, we selected, "Thai Style Stir Fried Noodles With Prawn" and an order of "Deep Fried Curried Fish Cake". Salads were up next and we chose to share an order of "Fresh Prawn Topped With Spicy Lemon Grass Dressing".

The food is served in a nice presentation but definitely not what you would call "Royal Thai" type cuisine. Main Courses offer diners 10 prawn dishes, 6 crab dishes, one of which we chose, the "Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab with Peppers and Garlic". There are 6 squid and 6 fish selections. We selected the "Snapper Steamed in Lime and Chilli".There are also 5 seafood selections and 9 beef, chicken, pork, duck and ostrich dishes. For a side order we chose a vegetable, "Stir Fried Broccoli in Oyster Sauce". There is also a dozen types of rice and a few dishes of noodles. Most entrees were very good but nothing was what we would call exceptional enough to identify it as a signature dish.

For desserts, we chose the "Flour Balls Mixed With Taro, Pumpkin, Pandanus In Warm Coconut Milk" and the "Glazed Water Chestnut in Coconut Milk served With Crushed Ice". The food is good but visiting here is most likely a result of the unique ambiance one can offer to fellow diners.
