Our visit was to the original location at Sukhumvit Soi 55. With a minimalist of Japanese ambience, the focus in this eatery is on food. Uomasa's menu comes in Thai, Japanese and English and features some freehand illustrations of the dishes.
My medium order of assorted sashimi (390 baht) featured seven kinds of raw seafood. Fresh from the ocean, the salmon, tuna, seabream, yellowtail, sweet prawn, marinated mackerel and squid served on a bed of crushed ice offered marvelous sweet tastes. Uomasa also offers several grilled items such as fish, seafood and duck. The hiramasu kabutoyaki (290 baht) or grilled yellowtail fish head and is recommended.
Among almost 30 varieties of sushi rolls, I ordered the Crunch, which presented eight pieces of California rolls on a bed of fluffy and crunchy fried flour. The rolls were scrumptious and went perfectly with the light crispy morsels.
Meanwhile, the summer rolls were delightful, and was a close second to the Crunch. Six pieces of rice wrapped with translucent rice flour sheet had previously been rolled with meaty prawn, green alfalfa sprout and oba leaves offered an unusual strong and overpowering taste. But the pop-in-the-mouth fish roe and the chewy rice flour skin adds a nice kick.
Other than the rolls, there are 15 varieties of nigiri-style sushi topped with raw seafood and another 15 selections topped with grilled fish. Some of them are topped with unusual sauces made with sea urchin, green tea and fish roe, among others.
For beef tongue fans, you can have it in salad, stew, steak form, deep-fried or grilled which was my choice and I had it grilled and found that it was excellent For those who are not so familiar with raw fish, there are a large number of salads, hot pot and noodle dishes. Tempura is another great choice for less adventurous palates and comes in several varieties. Lunch sets available from noon until 4:00PM with prices ranging from 190 - 600 baht. |
